Rabbeinu Bachayei in his commentary on the Torah (written more than 7 centuries ago) to Bereishit (Genesis) Chapter 1 verse 2 found a 4 letter word in code by skipping in intervals of 42. This code word was used by him as support for his position on the Jewish calendar.
